According to the Refugee UN Agency, Acnur600,000 people may be moving over the next six months, according to their latest survey.
The UNHCR -Gate, Celine Schmitt, said on Friday that people will need “housing, jobs, schools, hospitals, electricity and clean water” -all that is missing after 14 years of civil conflict.
She described to meet a mother living in a tent with her children having fled the rubble of her old home, without access to water or employment – with the school closest to two kilometers away.
House yearning
The mother said she was “planning to take the tent and go home and put the tent next to her house, just to go home … She was asking for a little humanitarian aid to restart, to rebuild her life.”
Twenty -three districts in Syria could see their populations at least double, putting additional tension on basic services and infrastructure already overloaded.
The research showed that 51 % of families intend to return to their home areas, with 93 % planning to go home within three to twelve months.
The survey took place between January 26 and February 23, researching 4,800 families – more than 29,000 individuals – in 514 travel locations in northwest of Syria.
In January, more than 3.4 million internal displaced people were still in the northwest. The intention to return is particularly strong among the internal displaced Idleb, where two in three families are choosing to return home. The old front line areas in the governors of Idleb and Aleppo are the main intended destinations.
UN support for returned
UNHCR and partners are providing transportation, legal assistance and support in the repair of damaged houses, as well as mattresses, blankets and winter clothes in recent months.
“Almost 14 years after the crisis began, Syria is in a crossroads, urgently needing reconstruction support, as years of conflict devastated the economy and infrastructure, leaving 90 % of the population dependent on helpSchmitt said.
“Now there is hope and a historical opportunity. UNHCR requires the international community to make a firm commitment to support Syrians with essential help for returned and investing in early recovery. ”
The temporary shelters are in rows in rural Aleppo in Syria.
