Rip. Mark Harris (RNC) said on Tuesday that President Trump successfully made the case against the Education Department during his 2024 campaign, which further supports the Republican efforts to drastically reduce his workforce.
In an interview on the Newsation “The Hill”, Anchor Black Burman asked Harris what changed the GOP legislators, 60 House Republicans voted against the steps to eliminate the department during the last Congress.
Now, a few Republicans are criticizing the move to reduce the administration’s employees by almost half.
“Well, I think there is hunger now because I think people really look like,” Harris added that weak test scores across the country have shown “failure in many ways”.
He also credited the President to influence the public spirit.
“And I think this president has done a tremendous job of making his case, we just passed in the last election, that the education department could not actually exhibit at the federal level,” Harris said, “We need to be able – whether it is by a block grant or anyway to return money, to return money.”
“Because the rule of the nearest house, mostly, is the most effective rule. And I believe it is true in education, “he added. “And I think we are looking at his hunger. And I think in this Congress, a lot of questions have been raised about it. “
Interviews came between reports that the education department was ready to reduce a significant share of its employees.
Soon after the interview, a senior department official announced that 1,315 employees were informed on Tuesday that they would be allowed to go.
The department started Trump’s second term with more than 4,000 employees, but even before Tuesday, hundreds were already on leave or took a buyout offer.
After this reduction, there will be 2,183 employees with the department, which Trump has repeatedly called the shutter.
